Why and When To Do A Discovery Phase

June, 2026

The purpose of a discovery phase is to gather information, clarify objectives, and identify potential risks before starting a project. It helps ensure that everyone involved has a clear understanding of the project's goals, target audience, and requirements. A discovery phase can involve activities such as workshops, stakeholder interviews, market/user research, competitive analysis, and more.

If your project is not large or complex, and you already have a clear understanding (plus documentation) of these, then in all honesty a full discovery phase is probably not necessary. Instead, a shorter scoping meeting or workshop may be sufficient to align yourself and your chosen developer on objectives and scope.

However, if your project is large or complex, then you need a discovery phase that is tailored to your project's specific needs and you should be wary of anyone that wants to jump straight into design or development without understanding the full context.
